Yeah I bought the whole series. My opinion, as we say in English is "a pile
of shyte" (with mistakes!)
...well I suppose it is better than nothing and might contain a word or two
that my other dictionaries do not have and you can always write it off your
taxes. To be honest we know what to expect when we hear "professional", but
for "public" use it is "OK", but you will find it lacking when you get down
to many "real" business texts.
For me "the dogs bollocks" is Ewa OÂżga SÂłownik Terminologii Prawniczej, or
the one by MaÂłkiewicz & MaÂłkiewicz. For buinsess it is still hard to beat
the Pocket Business Dictionary by Neymann and Malec.
Maybe others have different opinions/suggestions?
And then the real fun begins when some cleaver MBA idiot starts to invent
new words.....
Good hunting!

Hi, a few of us from varous circles are meeting at the Sherraton Hotel in
the "Someplace Elase" bar at about 6pm this Wednesday (Happy Hour 2 for the
price of one).
All translators (whatever language) are welcome to come and swop notes and
stories, etc. If popular it could become a regular thing and break down the
isolation of translators.

Temat: Peter Collins dictionary:Opinions...
Having been inspired to embark on my annual scan of bookshops for new
dictionaries I ventured out of my "cave" where I translate. One source
suggested the bookshop on ÂŻurawia, among others (Wawa zone). Its been years
since I've been there. In fact the last bookshop I went to was EMPiK about 6
months ago and was convinced that due to the lack of dictionaries that
someone somewhere is/was trying to subvert Polish language and trying to
create a "global newspeak".
Anyway, the bookshop on ÂŻurawai had an interesting collection of
dictionaries published by Peter Collins - so called "Biblioteka
Profesjonalisty"(!). Now I am no lawyer, but many of the entries struck me
as being pretty wierd and off the mark, eg:
Akcja blokowania miejsca pracy = sit down action
Akcjonariusz = company member
The first one might be better as Picket/ing/action and the second surely is
shareholder....
I hate to think what happens when they bring out their "medical" version !
(Take three tables...yes but which hole! - a sit down strike?!)
There are many such examples. Now 57PLN is not a huge amount of money, but
its still money, and if you buy the whole set(on finance etc) we are talking
about spending 300PLN.
I am not sure if anyone has had any experience of these dictionaries. It's
better than nothing and could help "inspired guesses" but Christ one
wonders.
Now its been 11 years since 1989, I guess we will have to wait until Poland
joins the EU to have real dictionaries so we can all agree on what an
"akcjonariusz" is. I know I am not alone with these problems and when
translating annual reports these problems are amplified. I also know that an
author gets very little for writing a book/dictionary, but what the hell are
"professional associations" for? PWN seems to have done a reasonable job on
their "Naukowo", and it's even on CD ROM!
Polish leagal association(s)....It seems that Polish universities produce
"lawyers" by the bucketfull but apparently they cannot speak English!
How the hell does one become a "sworn translator". I've seen a lot of
variations in quality and terminology. Who marks the exam papers - 4000PLN
in banknotes?
I do not want to moan and see so many posting looking for dictionaries, from
"old hands" on this ng.
Ah well, I guess we will have the reform of the health service faster than
good dictionaries....
